We are constantly bombarded with headlines promising the ultimate secret to better health— - just eat this, exercise that way, sleep like this…
With so much information at our fingertips, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Worse yet, much of it seems contradictory.
This overwhelm and volume of information can create inertia as we wait for a silver bullet.
But the truth is, there is no silver bullet (without side effects).
So, where do you start?
1. Identify your North Star.
In my post, New Year, New Opportunities, I talked about identifying your North Star—getting clear on what you truly want. Don’t skip this step. Just as in business, your daily priorities should align with your long term vision.
2. Evaluate how you are investing your time.
Often, when we need to address our health and we feel overwhelmed, we focus on improving other areas in our life because they feel more doable.
If you find yourself taking courses to be more resilient, address burnout or find balance in your life, while these can be helpful, make sure it isn’t a way of avoiding your health.
You can't be resilient, balanced or address burnout if you are chronically tired, irritable, have brain fog or low motivation and mood. Chronic, physiologic problems need physiologic solutions. So, don't be discouraged if you haven't been successful in trying to strategise your way beyond what may be hormone, neurotransmitter or glucose dysregulation.
It is time to work on your health.
Once you are sleeping better, your nutrition, hydration and movement are supporting even energy, you may find it was your biochemistry holding you back from being your best. In a healthier physiologic state, everything you layer on will yield a bigger impact.
3. Don’t get distracted.
Don’t get distracted by complex or expensive health solutions before you tackle the basics.
This is like decorating your house when the foundation is crumbling. If you ignore the basics, you will pour money and time into bandaid solutions and you won’t be able to experience the constellation of positive benefits.
4. You know what to do, so start with that.
I bet you can think of 1-3 things, right now, that would make a difference if you implemented them consistently. Take notice of how foods/movement etc... make you feel and trust your intuition.
Despite all the medical advancements and a growing selection of pharmacological solutions, the most impactful drivers of well-being remain the same: sleep, light, movement, nutrition, hydration, stress management, connection and purpose.
Attention to ANY of these health pillars will spill over into other areas of your life for compounding results.
