My Journey
As long as I can remember, I have been playing or working in health and wellness, first as a side hustle but then as my life evolved, my focus followed. Deciding to merge my longstanding love of health with my career, in 2009, I left learning & development and opened a boutique Pilates studio for women, specializing in pelvic health and chronic pain.
There was an overwhelming demand for pilates. Women looking for 'the' thing that would keep them healthy. I didn't have enough time to meet the need. Moreover, I felt like my impact was limited with the clients in perimenopause. Pilates was not solving all issues.
I realized I needed to widen my lens to be more impactful so I pivoted my focus to coaching principals and lifestyle strategies. This was the beginning of a what has become a deep dive into women's integrative health. I had no idea at this point, how relevant this shift would be for me.
In March 2022, my life changed. I was an active, (outwardly) healthy 50 year old with no history of illness but after a mild case of covid, overnight my health mysteriously spiralled downhill. Traditional medicine had no idea what was wrong and could only offer pharmaceutical bandaids and promises that with time, things would improve. But they didn't.
There is a huge gap in healthcare for women in perimenopause. Symptoms are often dismissed as 'normal' and put down to a hormonal shift. Furthermore, solutions are limited and predominantly pharmaceuticals. But pharmaceutical bandaids don't equal health. A sleeping aid will knock you out, for example, but it does not facilitate restorative sleep. It may be a necessary bridge in the short term, but if you miss out on quality sleep for long enough, there will be health consequences. I know how it feels to struggle with health and to want to feel like yourself again.
While not sexy, lifestyle strategies are powerful. And side effect free. Setting a strong foundation for your health will get you compounding gains as you age. Our body is exquisitely designed to regulate hunger, movement and other key processes to maximize our health, without exhaustive effort, when we give it REAL inputs. The added bonus is that these strategies are not expensive (often free!), they are simple and you don't need me or any other health expert to live with you to have results roll in.
It can be SO tempting to skip over the basics in favour of a quick fix but this is what led me here.
Think about it, if you build a house without a solid foundation and structure, in favour of putting your money and time into aesthetic finishes, what happens? In time the structure starts to crumble and fixing it is immeasurably complex because issues are deep within the walls. By midlife, we start to see this crumble, in part because the shift in hormones leave us more vulnerable and in part because we have accumulated years of load to our systems that is now too great for it to handle. Years of not prioritizing sleep or regular healthy movement, ignoring the effects of unmanaged stress and poor food choices that distress our gut.
Years of not prioritizing you. Because it is not the right time. With best intention to start tomorrow.
The reality is that life doesn't usually open up and create space, you have choose to create space. You have to choose you.
